Guest - Judi Fennell

Good morning everyone! Today we have the imaginative Judi Fennell visiting us. She'll be talking about how she came up with the idea and the location for her book In Over Her Head.

And she's offering a free book to one lucky reader. Read on to find out how you can be that lucky reader :-D

**********************************************************************************

In Over Her Head is the story of a Merman (Reel) and a woman (Erica) who's afraid of the ocean. A bit of a twist to the traditional mermaid stories, and, definitely a twist to The Little Mermaid-but that's about the only resemblance to the children's fairy tale you'll see.

I had a lot of fun with this story because I could build my world any way I wanted. And I love mythology, so you'll find some Norse, some Greek, some Atlantian, a couple of legends tossed in for good measure. I also love language - I was a Spanish major in college - so you'll also see twists on clichés, puns, plays-on-words; all things I love to read and play with.

I love writing paranormal stories. I can use magic, make my characters do things that you wouldn't expect (talking fish anyone? Dive-bombing albatross?), create an economy based on diamonds... I can let my imagination run free.

I'm afraid it went on a walk-about with this story.

The thing with my Mer series, however, is that it is based in reality. Okay, I know, you're saying, "How can a story about Mers be based in reality? There are no such things as Mers."

True... or are there?

I mean, the Bimini Road had to come from somewhere, right? It's a little too perfect to be accidental. The legend of Atlantis has been around for how many years? Wishful thinking or truth?

Therein lies the beauty of paranormal. I could take those events and use them to create a world that could happen. But I had to build it in a way that would be believable. And now, thanks to Google Earth, I really had to stretch my imagination because there is nothing off the coast of the US in the North Atlantic - until you hit Bermuda and all any reader would have to do was sign on and check it out.

But, hmm... if you follow the trajectory of the Bimini Road, guess where it ends up?

You got it.

So, bingo, that's where I set Atlantis.

Beneath Bermuda.

And if you do a bit of research on Bermuda, you'll find out that Bermuda is known for its beautiful underwater caves for scuba diving. So... what if (writers just love the What If?) there was another cave under there? Bigger than any Humans could possibly imagine? What if it was too far down for divers to go, but could fit inside the volcano that makes up Bermuda?

What if Atlantis was in there?

In my world, it is. And, oh, the fun I had creating it.

In Over Her Head will be followed by Wild Blue Under, which is the story of Reel's twin brother, Rod, the heir to the Mer throne, makes its splash November 1, 2009, followed by their sister, Angel's story, Catch of a Lifetime, in February 2010.

To celebrate the release of each of her books, Judi and the Atlantis Inn (www.AtlantisInn.com) and the Hibiscus House (www.HibiscusHouse.com) bed and breakfasts are raffling off three romantic beach getaway weekends. All information is on Judi's website, as well as excerpts, giveaways, reviews, a link to her blogs, and fun pictures from reader and writer conferences at www.JudiFennell.com. In Over Her Head
Sourcebooks, June 2009
ISBN # 9781402220012

When Erica Peck, one terrified-of-the-ocean marina owner, finds herself at the bottom of the sea conversing with a Mer man named Reel, she thinks she's died and gone to her own version of Hell. When the Oceanic Council demands she and Reel retrieve a lost cache of diamonds from the resident sea monster in return for their lives, she knows she's died and gone to Hell.

When they escape the monster and end up on a deserted island, she amends her opinion - she's died and gone to Heaven.

But when Reel sacrifices himself to allow her to return to her world, she realizes that, Heaven or Hell, with Reel, she's In Over Her Head.

About The Author:

Judi Fennell has had her nose in a book and her head in some celestial realm all her life, including those early years when her mom would exhort her to "get outside!" instead of watching Bewitched or I Dream of Jeannie on television. So she did--right into Dad's hammock with her Nancy Drew books. It's no wonder she likes to write tongue-in-cheek, light-hearted paranormal romance. Her debut book, In Over Her Head, is a story about a Merman and a woman who's terrified of the ocean. It is available now and will be followed by Wild Blue Under (11/01) and Catch of a Lifetime (2/10).

Judi's publisher, Sourcebooks, has generously offered a free book to one lucky reader. See below to find out how you can be that winner.
